Jerry Rushford Chats on Late Night Programs

Summer Celebration 2009 at Lipscomb University is July 1-3 and will feature dozens of opportunities to hear nationally known speakers. Such is Jerry Rushford who will speak during the popular Late Night Discussions in Beaman Library. His first session (Wednesday) will feature "Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) & and Christian Faith; a Tricentennial Birthday Celebration" and the second (Thursday) will center on "William Gladstone (1809-1898) & the Christian Faith: a Bicentennial Birthday Celebration. The annual summer lecture series will climax with picnic, concert and fireworks on Friday evening, July 3.

Annual Summer Reading Program Begins

Summertime + reading + discussion equals the Beaman Library/WNBA Summer Reading Series. This annual event begins June 15 with Ed Gleaves, former Tennessee State Librarian and Archivist, leading a discussion of Kurban Sain's Ali and Nino. Selections for 2009 were chosen to develop the theme Books Beyond Our Borders: Reading and Writing about Other Cultures. Included in the series are the following:

2009 Friends Meeting Announced

Reserve April 7, 2009 for the next meeting of Friends of Beaman Library. Brenda Rickman Vantrease, author of The Illuminator (2005) and Mercy Seller (2008), will speak at the 6:30 p.m. event. This annual meeting is co-sponsored with the Student Government Association of Lipscomb University.

Exam Week Kick-off

Students will be able to nourish their brains for exam week. Beaman Library will host an Open House on Friday evening, December 12th, from 7 - 11 p.m. Tired and stressed students will be able to relax in the Staff Room with library staff members providing and serving the food.

Tennessee Archives Week at Beaman Library

November 2-8, 2008 is Tennessee Archives Week during which libraries all across the state will be hosting programs, presenting speakers and creating exhibits to raise awareness of Archives in Tennessee.

At Beaman Library, you can view the growth of Lipscomb University in a display of photos and drawings of the campus “Master Plan” as it has changed through the years. In a separate exhibit, the A. M. Burton building is shown as it was first College Hall, the primary classroom building. Later known as the Administration Building, it housed both administrative offices and classrooms. Following another remodeling, it was named the Burton Bible Building until 2007 when, after a total renovation, the space became home to the College of Pharmacy.

New Faces, New Programs

Fall semester began with several new faces on the library staff. Julie Harston will be the Reference Librarian, succeeding Marie Byers who retired in August. A newly appointed Catalog Librarian, Elizabeth Heffington, will partner with a new Assistant in Cataloging, Lisa Mortensen to complete the Technical Services Division with veteran staffer Pam Eatherly.

New computers in the Reference Resource Center will make searching several new databases a snap. If you need to brush up on test-taking skills, try the LearningExpress Library. If you want to learn the fate of your 401(K) or other investments, try ValueLine--one of the most respected providers of investment information.
